On October 4, 1989, in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, Dequantes Devontay Lamar was born. He attended Ronald McNair High School and played baseball competitively for nearly four years while he was a student there. From a young age, he was also drawn to reading and creative writing.
He wanted to be a professional center fielder and leadoff batter. He was able to secure a scholarship for Fort Valley University and played college football while still a freshman. He immediately changed his mind, though, and started to take rapping more seriously. He accepted a position at an airport but soon lost it.
