Rebecca Skloot was born in Springfield, Illinois, to poet, novelist, and essayist Floyd Skloot and Betsy McCarthy, a professional knitter and pattern book author. She finished her secondary education at Portland Community College and became a Veterinary Technician at Metropolitan Learning Centre in Portland, Oregon. She holds a BS in biological sciences from Colorado State University and an MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of Pittsburgh.
