Career

In late 1984, Schaeffer was cast as Annie Barnes on ABC’s One Life to Live for a six-month stint. During this period, she worked hard to boost her modeling chances. She had difficulty finding work because, at 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 meters), she was deemed too short for high-fashion modeling. Rebecca traveled to Japan in the hopes of finding more modeling gigs, but she struggled due to her size. When she returned to New York City, she chose to focus on her acting career.

In 1986, Schaeffer was cast in Woody Allen’s comedy Radio Days, but her role was deleted after just one scene. She continued modeling while still working as a waitress. When she appeared on the cover of Seventeen magazine, television executives casting for the sitcom My Sister Sam starring Pam Dawber saw her. Schaeffer was cast as Patricia “Patti” Russell, a young lady who moves from Oregon to San Francisco to live with her 29-year-old sister Samantha (“Sam”) when their parents die. Schaeffer shared a house with co-star Pam Dawber while shooting the series. My Sister Sam’s second season was discontinued in April 1988 due to low ratings after launching as one of the top 25 hits.

Following My Sister Sam, Schaeffer starred in the films Out of Time, Voyage of Terror: The Achille Lauro Affair, The End of Innocence, and Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills in small parts. She also represented Thursday’s Child, a children’s charity.
