Evans, a former wrestler who graduated from Niagara-Wheatfield High School in New York, advanced twice to the state finals tournament by taking first place in his weight class and earning all-state accolades. At 145 pounds, Evans finished fourth in the state in 1997. He again finished fourth in the nation in 1998 when weighing 171 pounds. He won the 165-pound weight division in the same competition in 2000.
Early in his career, Evans represented Michigan State in the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA Division I. In the 2002 conference championships, he lost by decision against UFC fighter Jacob Volkmann when he placed fourth. He won the 2003 Big Ten Championship and later finished third in the same event.
