Biography
Praveen Kumar Sobti (December 6, 1947 – February 7, 2022) was an Indian hammer and discus thrower, film actor, politician, and Border Security Force, veteran. As a 20-year-old, he joined the Border Security Force, where he drew the attention of his officers with his fine athletic abilities and went on to represent India in various athletic events in “Discus throw.” As an athlete, he won four medals at the Asian Games, two of which were gold, a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, and he competed in two Olympics. As an actor, he appeared in over 50 Hindi films and portrayed the well-known character “Bheem” in B.R. Chopra’s 1988 television series Mahabharat. As a politician, he ran in the 2013 Delhi Legislative elections on behalf of the Aam Aadmi Party but lost. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014.

Praveen Kumar Sobti was a major figure in Indian athletics during the 1960s and 1970s. For many years, he dominated the Indian hammer and discus throws. He won gold medals in the discus throw at the Asian Games in 1966 and 1970, setting an Asian Games record of 56.76 meters. He won silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in Kingston in 1966 and the Asian Games in Tehran in 1974. He took part in the 1968 Summer Olympics as well as the 1972 Summer Olympics.
