Phiona Mutesi Biography
Harriet Mutesi, Phiona’s mother, gave birth to her on March 28, 1996. She grew up in the Kampala ghetto of Katwe. Julia, her older sister, and her other siblings were raised by their mother when her father died of AIDS when she was three.
But her grief did not end there because she also lost her sister. Due to financial difficulties, she eventually dropped out of school and began selling corn. However, her life was transformed forever when she met Robert Katende after learning about a project operated by Sports Outreach Institute, a Christian-led sports mission.
