Rivers led NC State to an 8–4 record as a rookie, including a Tangerine Bowl victory against Minnesota. In 2001, as a sophomore, he threw for 2,586 yards and 16 touchdowns. In addition, he guided the Wolfpack to victory in their first nine games in 2002. As a senior, he passed for 4,491 yards and 34 touchdowns in 12 games, ending his career as the most prolific and durable quarterback in ACC history. Rivers Rivers, along with Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, and Matt Schaub, was one of seventeen quarterbacks selected in the 2004 NFL Draft. He signed a six-year, $40.5 million deal with the San Diego Chargers in August 2004, which included a $14.5 million signing bonus.
Rivers earned his first NFL start against the Oakland Raiders on September 11, 2006. Despite only throwing 11 times, he completed 8 passes, one for a touchdown, in a 27–0 victory against the Raiders. Rivers just passed Fouts to become the Chargers’ all-time passing yards leader on October 13, 2016.
