Phil Scott’s Career
According to Phil’s business career, after graduating from high school, Scott started working at DuBois Construction, a Middlesex company founded by his uncle. Scott joined the company as a co-owner in 1986.
Scott has served as President of the Vermont Associated General Contractors. A fire at DuBois Construction on January 6, 2012, caused significant damage, but the owners were able to rebuild and continue operations.
Scott sold his portion of the company after being elected governor to avoid any conflicts of interest, as DuBois Construction does business with the State of Vermont. He sold his 50% stake for $2.5 million plus 3% interest paid over 15 years.
Scott stated that in order to protect the firm’s bonding capacity, he chose to fund the sale himself rather than having the company borrow the money to pay him in full. Critics claimed that Scott’s sale of his company part did not totally eliminate potential conflicts of interest, but Scott and the attorney who arranged the sale on his behalf disagreed.
