Hartman joined the ensemble of The Groundlings in 1979 and quickly rose to prominence. He successfully auditioned for NBC’s variety program Saturday Night Live (SNL) after acting in the films Jumpin’ Jack Flash and There Amigos in 1986. Hartman had intended to quit the program in 1991, but Michaels persuaded him to remain in order to increase his profile.
