Phil Donahue was born on December 21, 1935, to an Irish Catholic family in Cleveland, Ohio. Phillip Donahue and Catherine Donahue were his parents (McClory). He grew up in a middle-class family. His father worked as a furniture sales clerk, and his mother worked as a shoe clerk in a department store. He went to Our Lady of Angels Elementary School in West Park. Later, he enrolled at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio. He continued his education at the University of Notre Dame, earning a B.B.A. in 1957.
