Phil Collins Biography
Philip David Charles Collins was born on January 30, 1951, in Chiswick, Middlesex, which is now in the London Borough of Hounslow. Greville Philip Austin Collins, his father, was an insurance agent, and Winifred June Collins was a theatrical agent. Carole, his sister, was a professional ice skater, and Clive, his older brother, is a well-known cartoonist.
Collins was five years old when he received a toy drum kit for Christmas. His uncle later made him a makeshift set, which he regularly used. He practiced by singing along to music on the radio and television. “Phil was always special,” said Barbara Speake, founder of the stage school Collins later attended. “At the age of five, he entered a Butlins talent contest singing ‘Davy Crockett,’ but he stopped the orchestra halfway through to tell them they were in the wrong key.” He never learned to read or write traditional musical notation, instead relying on a system he devised himself.
