John Peter Ricketts (born August 19, 1964) is an American politician and businessman who has served as Nebraska’s 40th Governor since 2015. He belongs to the Republican Party.

Pete Ricketts was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska, on August 19, 1964. He is a devout Roman Catholic. He is the eldest of Joe and Marlene Ricketts’ four children. Joe Ricketts was a businessman, and Marlene was a teacher.
Joe launched First Omaha Securities, one of the first bargain stockbrokers in the United States, in 1975, after moving his family to Omaha. After acquiring TD Waterhouse in 2006, the company changed its name to Ameritrade, went public in 1997, and changed its name to TD Ameritrade. Ricketts and his siblings, Tom, Laura, and Todd, all attended Omaha’s Westside High School, where he graduated in 1982.
He received a BA in biology from the University of Chicago in 1986 and an MBA in marketing and finance from the University of Chicago in 1991.

Pete Ricketts returned to Omaha after finishing graduate school, according to his career. He spent a year working for the Union Pacific Railroad and then as a salesman for a Chicago environmental consultant.
In 1993, he began working for his father’s company, starting at the call center for a few months before being promoted to a series of executive positions, eventually becoming the company’s chief operating officer during his father’s stint as CEO.
He indicated in a 2006 report that his net worth was between $45 million and $50 million. In 2007, he co-founded and became director and president of the Platte Institute for Economic Research, describing it as a “free market think tank.” He is a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Ricketts stepped down as chairman in 2008, and he and his family own slightly less than 12% of the corporation, with his son Todd serving on the board.
In 2014, his son Peter was elected governor of Nebraska. The family owns the vast majority of the Chicago Cubs baseball team, which raised $150 million in equity in 2014 to fund stadium repairs at Wrigley Field.
