- He was awarded two Bronze Stars for valor for his service in Vietnam and commanded the 7th Infantry Division and the 101st Airborne Division. Dawkins was the commander of the 1st Battalion 23rd Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Hovey, Korea, from 1971 to 1972, while still a lieutenant colonel.
