Pernell was born in the United States on May 18, 1928, in Waycross, Georgia. He was the son of sales representative Pernell Elven Roberts Sr. and Minnie Myrtle Morgan Roberts (mother). His ethnicity was Afro-American and his nationality was American.
He sang in nearby USO shows, played the horn, and acted in school and church plays during his secondary school years. He attended Georgia Tech but did not continue his education there.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1946 and served for many years. Later, he attended but did not graduate from, the University of Maryland, where he made his first appearance in traditional theatre.
While an understudy, including Othello and Antigone, left school to act in summer stock, Pernell appeared in four rehearsals.

He worked on such productions as “The Adding Machine,” “The Firebrand,” and “Confidence of Our Fathers” during his career before spending a few years performing the works of art with the prestigious Arena Stage Company in Washington, DC. “The Taming of the Shrew,” “The Playboy of the Western World,” “The Glass Menagerie,” “The Importance of Being Earnest,” and “Twelfth Night” were among the plays prepared there.
In 1955, he made his Broadway debut with “Today around evening time in Samarkand,” and in the same year, he won the Drama Desk Award for “Best Actor” for his off-Broadway performance as “Macbeth,” which was quickly followed by “Romeo and Juliet” as Mercutio.
Other Broadway productions include Joanne Woodward’s “The Lovers” (1956), Kim Stanley’s “A Clearing in the Woods” (1957), and an appearance in Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” (1957). (1957).
Following that, he returned to Broadway fifteen years later to play the title role opposite Ingrid Bergman in “Chief Brassbound’s Conversion” (1972).
Aside from standard roles in “Camelot” and “The King and I,” he played Rhett Butler to Lesley Ann Warren’s Scarlett O’Hara in a poorly received melodic rendition of “Run with the Wind,” and appeared in another misinformed melodic creation based on the life of “Mata Hari.”
The following years were difficult. However, he never found a strong balance in films, with roles in low-budget films such as The Kashmiri Run (1970) and Four Rode Out (1970) making little impact.
