Azinger was born on January 6, 1960, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, to Ralph, a navigator in the United States Air Force who became a businessman. He began playing golf at the age of five. Ralph established a marina after retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1972, and Paul spent his summer pumping gas and painting boats.
He attended and graduated from Sarasota High School when his family relocated to Sarasota, Florida. In the late 1970s, Azinger attended Brevard Community College. He found more time to train his swing while there, playing on the team as a walk-on and landing a summer job at the Bay Hill Golf Academy in Orlando, which gave him additional practice time. Practice-led to different opportunities, including a scholarship to Florida State University in Tallahassee.
