Boulaye was born on 3 May 1954 in a cab driving between two cities in Midwestern Nigeria when her mother went into labor, and she was reared in a strict Catholic family with nine children, including airline pilot Tony Ebigwei, who was killed in the 1978 Nigerian Airways aircraft tragedy. She is of Igbo descent. Boulaye survived the 1967–70 Biafran war as a youngster, which she credits to her strong faith.

Actress Patricia Ebigwei was best known for her role as Yum-Yum in The Black Mikado under her birth name. She appeared in The Two Gentlemen of Verona after Hair, but her breakthrough part was under her maiden name. Carmen Jones (at London’s Old Vic Theatre, in a production directed by Simon Callow) and Jesus Christ Superstar are two more theater performances in which she has appeared. Sun Dance, Boulaye’s twelve-year-in-the-making West End musical, premiered in 2003. Described as a celebration of “Africa’s colors and sounds in a display of ceremonial dances, rites, and initiation ceremonies, all performed out to the rhythm of African drums”.
