Noam Chomsky was born on December 7, 1928. His hometown was Philadelphia, and his neighborhood was East Oak Lane. His father was an Ashkenazi Jew who left Ukraine and settled in the United States of America, where he taught at Gratz College in Philadelphia. His mother was both an activist and a teacher.
They’d met for the first time at Mikveh Israel. Noam, the eldest of two children, was known for his fierce competitiveness. David, his younger brother, was less competitive and more laid-back. The two brothers were raised to practice Judaism; they learned Hebrew and enjoyed discussing politics. They were also fascinated by Zionism.
Noam had experienced a great deal of anti-Semitism in his youth. Chomsky attended Gratz College and began to identify with left-anarchist politics at a young age. He wrote an academic paper on fascism and its fall, his first of many, as a culmination of the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939. Chomsky enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania when he was 16 years old.
His topics were broad and general in nature. He taught Hebrew and studied Arabic. He almost dropped out of university after becoming disillusioned with the teaching programs and methods. He was reintroduced to academia after speaking with Zellig Harris, a Russian linguist. Chomsky studied theoretical linguistics as a major. His doctoral dissertation was completed at Harvard University.

In 1958, he published a book called Syntactic Structures. By 1962, he had become America’s de facto linguistics authority. During the Vietnam War, he became very politically active, believing that America should not have been involved in the conflict. Even today, he is politically active. He and George Miller (a Harvard professor) co-authored several papers on mathematical linguistics.
