Nick started playing professional hockey while attending the University of North Dakota. The NHL Central Scouting Bureau placed him 19th on their final ranking of the best draft-eligible North American skaters heading into the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. From 2012 to 2014, he was a member of the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL).
He was chosen to the 2012-13 USHL All-first Team during his first season.
