Wickramasinghe studied music with Vincent Somapala and Ananda Jayasinghe. In 1959, she sang her debut song for Radio Ceylon’s ‘Amateur Voice’ program. Neela Wickramasinghe was given the opportunity to record her debut song with Radio Ceylon in 1967. She was chosen as an A-grade artiste in 1973 based on the songs sung by the SLBC’s research division. She earned a Sangeeth Visharada Degree in 1974 after studying North Indian Classical Music. Wickramasinghe had a string of successful singles, including duets with T. M. Jayaratne. Wickramasinghe afterward decided to become a music instructor. She opted to retire early in 1998 after 23 years of teaching in several schools, including an eight-year spell at Visakha Vidyalaya in Colombo. Wickramasinghe was diagnosed with severe abdominal cancer and survived.
