Natalie Woods started performing as a child star at the age of four, and at the age of eight, she co-starred in Miracle on 34th Street in 1972. Natalie began her on-screen presence as a highly conscientious teenie-tiny actress. Under-18 performers are required by California law to spend at least three hours in the classroom. ‘I always felt awful having the team waiting for 3 hours,’ Wood remembered. I dashed to the sets as soon as class was over. Director Joseph L. Mankiewicz always remembered Natalie and stated, ‘I never met a brighter moppet!’
Natalie graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1956 and secured a contract with Warner Brothers. Wood had even greater success as a television performer, receiving strong ratings and critical praise. When Elia Kazan auditioned Natalie for Splendor in the Grass, he asked her what made her tick. Wood said, ‘I am being psychoanalyzed by (her husband) Robert J. Wagner.’ ‘Well, that did it!’ writes Kazan afterward. Her unfinished scientific film ‘Brainstorm’ was released posthumously.
