His parents’ interracial marriage
Morris was born in Germany to a German father and a Kenyan/Swedish mother. Dirk and Jessica Nowitzki, his parents, fell in love the moment they met in February 2010 at a charity event for the Sports for Education and Economic Development (SEED) initiative. It was NBA All-star weekend in Dallas, and one of the evenings was a charity function when he ended up meeting his future-wife Jessica, who was working at a Dallas art gallery. In an interview, Dirk said that the feeling was reciprocal and that they just bonded intellectually after their first encounter. He was fascinated by Jessica’s stunning appearance and her passion for art, athletics, family, and children.
On Valentine’s Day, he proposed to her and took her to a romantic supper. Dirk never had a problem with race or color since he grew up with people of many ethnicities, having played for the national team when half of his teammates were from Yugoslavia. In 2012, the pair married in a traditional wedding ceremony in Germany and Kenya. They married in a traditional Kenyan ceremony, which was a new experience for both of them since Jessica had spent her whole childhood in Sweden. Morris is the family’s youngest child. Malaika Nowitzki, his older sister, was born in 2013, and Max, his elder brother, was born in 2015. According to Dirk, the arrival of his children was a wildlife shift since his life is now all about the kids, and there is a feeling of pride in whatever tiny things they do. His father had a difficult time in 2009 when his ex-fiancee was arrested in a fraud case. During a sit-down interview with Graham Bensinger, he opened up about his painful life experiences and how his life, which he had kept secret for years, suddenly became public. When asked about his ex-arrest, fiancee’s he replied he was as surprised as everyone else and had no clue when it occurred.
In addition, he was quite humiliated by the whole situation and felt uncomfortable being in public. It affected Dirk hard as a sensitive man, and he felt empty. He was always thinking about how he was going to get through it and go back to basketball. Fortunately, his family was there for him and assisted him in moving on, teaching him that such things may happen to anybody. It isn’t just him.
