Pretelini only received public notice because of her ties with Mexico’s 57th President, Enrique Pena Nieto. He served as governor of the State of Mexico from 2005 to 2011 and launched his presidential campaign only a few days after leaving office as governor. He is a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the country’s main political party, which ruled Mexico for 71 years until it was ousted by the National Action Party (PAN) in 2000. Since the PRI’s reign was tainted by corruption, Pea Nieto’s victory in 2012, which represented the PRI’s comeback after a 12-year sabbatical, was greeted with huge demonstrations throughout the country.
