However, owing to the turmoil in Zimbabwe, he relocated to New Zealand after 12 years. He was reared in Harare by his grandparents, while his parents previously lived in Hwange. However, when the situation in Zimbabwe deteriorated, and riots erupted, Mike’s family relocated to New Zealand. It was his father’s choice, and they moved to New Zealand in search of a better life. Mike was overjoyed at the prospect of relocating to New Zealand at the moment. Mike’s parents had abandoned their grandfather in Zimbabwe.

Mike Mathetha’s career began with regular state and national level bouts after receiving Kick Boxing instruction from City Kickboxing’s head trainer, Mr. Eugene Bareman. He soon met his partner, Israel Adesanya, and the two went on to compete in different Kickboxing matches. Israel and he met at Eden Terrace Gym. He and Israel traveled to China for Kickboxing matches, and when they returned, Mike found himself with few local combat possibilities. As a result, he chooses to experiment with combining martial arts bouts. He prepared for MMA bouts by training himself. In 2017, he defeated Jo Vain Duin in his debut MMA bout. Then, in 2018, he battles Hyun Min Hwang and wins in the first round once again. Mike beat Dimps Tahau Tiopira Gillies in the third round of their last bout on February 22, 2020.
