Mickey was an accomplished guitarist, keyboardist, bassist, drummer, and harmonica player. During an interview in 2001, he said,

“My grandma, Nanny Rase, used to play the ukulele.” She asked if I wanted her to demonstrate me some chords when I was 11 years old. I was able to play the chords she taught me. I tried those chords on a classical guitar and was captivated.”
