Michael finished second in the SCCA National Championship Run-Offs at Road Atlanta in 1985, his first season of SCCA Formula Atlantic racing. He won four races in the ECAR Formula Atlantic Championship between 1986 and 1987, finishing third in points in 1987. In 1988, he raced in six Indy Lights races for Chip Ganassi Racing, winning once at Pocono. In 1989, he attempted to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 with Bettenhausen Racing’s 1987 Lolachassis but failed, as did teammate Tony Bettenhausen.
Michael crashed heavily in practice at Pocono Raceway the same year, failing to qualify as well. In 1990, he finished first in the Camel Lights division at the 24 Hours of Daytona with his father, Peter. He also returned to the CARTseries that year, driving a 1987 Lola chassis in seven races, with a career-best finish of 12th at the Meadowlands race. He also raced two more times for Dale Coyne Racing and competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1991, then returned in 1994 and 1995 to try to qualify for the Indy 500 in a 1993 Lola powered by a pushrod V8 engine designed and built by his father, Peter.
In 1994, Michael was unable to complete rookie orientation, and the team was forced to hire Johnny Parsons to drive the car, which never got up to speed and did not qualify. Michael took over driving duties in 1995, but he failed to qualify once more. They were unable to accelerate due to a significant reduction in turbo boost for the pushrod V-8s. He left the company in 1995.
