Michael Connelly was born on July 21, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to W. Michael Connelly and Mary Connelly. He was the second oldest of four children. When Michael was 12, his family relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. St. Thomas Aquinas High School was where he finished his education.

When he was 16, his interest in crime and mystery grew stronger. This occurred when he witnessed a man throw an object into a hedge on his way home from work one day. He went there to look into it and discovered a gun wrapped in a lumberjack shirt. He called the cops, but the man had already left.
