Seven children—not all of them their own—were raised by Denise and Jim together. Michael and Jenny, two children from a previous marriage that Denise had, followed by her older brother Brian and the twins five years later.
Both Jim and her grandfather Jack were Army veterans. She is of Italian and Irish descent (from her paternal granddad). Megan loved her older brother Brian and picked up soccer at the age of three after watching him play. But when the daughters were in second grade, he began abusing narcotics. Her brother was put in foster care when she was ten.
He frequently entered and exited many prisons, including the ultra-max Pelican Bay State Prison. After witnessing his younger sister’s success in global football and being unable to be present with his family, Brian has since made a determined effort to keep away from narcotics. Soccer served as a means of escape from the drug usage that is rampant in rural California for both Rachael and Megan.
