Maya Govind was born on 17th January 1940 in Lucknow and comes from a well-to-do family. When she finished her studies, she was residing in Lucknow. She had a talent for composing poetry, poems, and novels when she was a child. Maya Govind graduated from Kanya Vaidik Inter College and subsequently earned her B.ED. before moving to Mumbai to pursue a career as a composer. She graduated with B. ED since her family had always encouraged her to be a teacher. She also remained a teacher for a few years, instructing pupils at Bal Vidya Mandir in Music, Hindi, and History.
Maya also studied singing for four years at the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth in Lucknow. Shambu Maharaj has also taught Maya Kathak.
