Martin Compston began his football career as a teenager as a youth player with Aberdeen. Following that, he joined his hometown professional club, Greenock Morton.

In the 2001–02 season, he made two first-team appearances. Furthermore, he played as a substitute in Morton’s 4–0 defeats to Alloa Athletic and Queen of the South. He briefly played junior football for Greenock Juniors after leaving Morton.
