Mark Farner, full name Mark Fredrick Farner, was born on September 29, 1948, in Flint, Michigan, United States. Delton Farner and Betty Farner were his parents. During WWII, his father was a tank driver in the Seventh Armored Division. He showed an early interest in music and attended guitar lessons throughout his school years.

Mark Farner began his career in Terry Knight and The Pack between 1965 and 1966, The Bossmen in 1966, and The Pack (also known as The Fabulous Pack) between 1967 and 1968. In 1968, he formed the American hard-rock band Grand Funk Railroad with Don Brewer on drums and Mel Schacher on bass guitar. Craig Frost, who played keyboards, joined the band in 1973.
Mark was the band’s lead guitarist and singer, as well as the songwriter for the majority of the songs. “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home),” one of the band’s most famous songs, was released in 1970 and was a huge success. He also wrote the 1975 song “Bad Time,” which was the last of the band’s four singles to reach the Billboard Hot 100 Top 5. The group, however, disbanded in 1976.
In 1977, he released his first self-titled album as a solo artist. “No Frills” (1978) and “Just Another Injustice” (1979) were his other albums (1988).
