Mark Nelson Chesnutt was born on September 6, 1963, in Beaumont, Texas. He is the son of singer and record collector Bob Chesnutt, who influenced him greatly, and when he was 17, his father took him to start recording. Mark began playing the drums as a child after receiving a drum kit as a Christmas present.

Mark dropped out of high school in grade eleven and began playing in Texas clubs. At the age of 17, he was taken to Nashville, Tennessee, by his father to begin recording his music. He became the house band for Beaumont nightclub Cutters, and he recorded his music with various regional labels.
