Marion was born and raised in the Minnesota town of Carver County. Gordon and Ellen Ross, civilized natives of a Canadian county, were her parents. Her early years were spent in Waconia, but due to her father’s transfer, they were forced to relocate to Willmar and then to Albert Lea, Minnesota.
She changed the spelling of her name from Marian to Marion when she was only 13 years old because she preferred it that way. She was very interested in acting and decided to pursue a career in that field. She majored in drama at the MacPhail Center for the Arts. She was able to finish her education at South West High School. She graduated from Point Loma High School, which is located in San Diego.
