He is the son of Brian and Ottilia Te’o, and he has five siblings: BrieAnne, Tiare, Eden, and Maya, as well as Manasseh. He went to Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii, and played for them. Te’o was named the Honolulu Advertiser’s state defensive player of the year and the Gatorade state player of the year as a junior in 2007.
He was named first-team all-state after racking up 90 tackles and five sacks on defense and 400 yards and ten touchdowns as a running back. Te’o helped Punahou win its first-ever state football championship during his senior year in 2008. He was named the 2008 Sporting News High School Athlete of the Year, making him the first Hawaiian and the first athlete of Polynesian descent to receive the honor. Te’o is only the third Hawaii high school player to be named to the USA Today All-American team, following Pat Kesi in 1990 and Jason Ching in 1995 (Ching is also a Punahou and Notre Dame alumnus).
He was regarded as one of the top prospects in the class of 2009. Te’o committed to the University of Notre Dame on National Signing Day in 2009. From 2009 to 2012, he was a member of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. In the Irish’s game against Purdue, he made his first collegiate start.
