Mahmoud Darwish Biography

Darwish was born on March 13, 1941, in the Palestinian hamlet of al-Birwa. He grew up during a period of immense political upheaval, when Palestine was conquered by Israel following the Arab-Israeli war in 1948. Darwish’s family was forced to evacuate their home and become refugees, and he spent the majority of his youth in refugee camps in Lebanon and Syria.

Education & Employment

Darwish was educated in a refugee camp in Lebanon before attending American University in Beirut. He began composing poetry at a young age, and his first book, “Asafir bila ajniha” (Birds Without Wings), was released in 1964. Darwish published poetry volumes, plays, essays, and memoirs throughout his career. He was also a founding member of the Palestinian Writers’ Guild and worked as an editor for various literary periodicals.
