Macy Gray was born in Canton, Ohio, on September 6, 1967. When she was a baby, her father abandoned the family. Her stepfather, a steelworker, and her mother, a math teacher, raised her.

She began studying the piano when she was seven years old. She attended a number of institutions, including Canton South High School, from which she received her diploma in 1985. She was temporarily expelled from a boarding school due to her actions. She afterward went to study scriptwriting at the University of Southern California.
