Richard Penniman was born on December 5, 1932, in Macon, Georgia. Bud’s father, Bud, made a living selling moonshine and didn’t do much to hide his disapproval of his son’s early homosexual tendencies. Richard was 13 years old when he was ordered to leave his family’s home. His relationship with his father was never repaired. Richard’s father was murdered at the age of 19 in a nearby bar. Richard used to sing in church when he was a kid.

Specialty Records’ producer Art Rupe was looking for a pianist singer for a band of musicians. After listening to Richard’s tape, Art chose him. Tutti Frutti, a song he recorded in 1955, became a hit and peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Rhythm and Blues Best-Sellers chart. Long Tally Sally, one of his songs, reached No. 1 on the R&B chart in 1956. Following his success, he became a popular artist for package tours across the United States.
