She is a yoga instructor as well as a registered nurse. However, she has kept her professional life out of the spotlight, unlike his father who started his acting career in Broadway shows, moving on to film with Up the River (1930) for Fox and appearing in supporting parts for the following decade, often playing criminals. He was hailed for his performance as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest (1936), although he was cast secondary to other Warner Bros. performers who won prominent parts. Bogart also drew praise for his portrayal of mobster Hugh “Baby Face” Martin in William Wyler’s Dead End (1937).
His rise from supporting actor to superstar began with High Sierra (1941) and was launched by The Maltese Falcon (1941), considered one of the first great noir films. Bogart’s private investigators, Sam Spade (in The Maltese Falcon) and Philip Marlowe (in 1946’s The Big Sleep), served as inspiration for detectives in subsequent noir films. His most notable romantic lead performance was alongside Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca (1942), which won him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
In the World War I African adventure The African Queen (1951), he earned the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role of a cantankerous river steam launch captain opposite Katharine Hepburn’s missionary.
