Leo Sayer was born on May 21, 1948, in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, to an Irish mother, Theresa Nolan, and an English father, Thomas E. G. Sayer. He attended St Peter’s Catholic Primary School. He was the second of three brothers, the first being Michael, who was born in 1939, and the third, Brian, who was born in 1951. Later, he attended Blessed Robert Southwell (now St Oscar Romero Catholic School) in Goring-by-Sea before going on to study commercial art and graphic design at West Sussex College of Art and Design in Worthing, Sussex.

- Sayer started his career in music by co-writing songs with David Courtney, including “Giving It All Away,” which gave Roger Daltrey of the Who their first solo success in 1973. Sayer started his music career the same year, under the guidance of Adam Faith, who signed him to the Chrysalis label in the United Kingdom and Warner Bros. Records in the United States.
- The compilation album The Very Best of Leo Sayer (originally released by Chrysalis in the UK and worldwide, with different cover art by Rhino Records in the US in 2000) earned Sayer’s first UK No. 1 LP and his eighth straight UK Top 20 album in 1979.
- With DJ Meck’s remix of “Thunder In My Heart,” he returned to the top of the UK Singles Chart on February 12, 2006. It was his first appearance in the UK Top 10 in almost twenty-four years, and his second chart-topper in the UK nearly three decades after his first. Leo Sayer: At His Very Best, a career-spanning compilation CD, was published in the United Kingdom on March 6, 2006.
