Duane Chapman Sr. and his first wife, La Fonda Sue Darnall, raised him. He was born in Groom and spent a large part of his childhood in Pampa, Texas. In his early adolescence, he relocated to Colorado. He had a habit of running away from home and skipping school. He frequently joined a criminal gang. He had to be placed in foster care and then in a boy’s care home. He also fled from there.
