Career

Laura Muir made her international debut in 2011 at the European Cross-Country Championships, where she was a member of the Great Britain junior women’s squad that won gold. At the end of the year, she was nominated for the “Daily Record” Young Athlete of the Year award.

She then competed for Great Britain in the 800 meters at the 2013 World Athletics Championships, reaching the semi-finals with a personal best time of 2:00.83.

She ran 4:00.07 in the 1500 meters to break Yvonne Murray’s 27-year-old Scottish record in the 2014 Diamond League event in Paris, and 3:57.49 in the 1500 meters to beat Kelly Holmes’ British record at the 2016 Diamond League event at the Olympic Park in London on July 22nd.

Laura lowered her Personal Best and National 1500m record to 3:55.22 on August 27, 2016, at the Paris Diamond League meet, becoming only the third British woman to win a Diamond League title when she won the 1500m gold in Zurich.

On the 18th of February 2017, she beat Kelly Holmes’ previous British 1000m record of 2:31.93 at the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix, and on the 4th of January, she broke the British Indoor 5000m record of 14.49.12.

She won gold in the 1500 meters at the 2017 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade, breaking Doina Melinte’s 32-year-old championship record in the process, and then went on to win gold in the 3000 meters the next day, shattering another championship record.

She also finished fourth in the 1500m and sixth in the 5000m at the 2017 World Championships in London, and she revealed that she would miss the 2018 Commonwealth Games in April to concentrate on her veterinary medicine exams.

Muir did compete in the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in March 2018, where she earned a bronze medal in the 3000m, and then won the 1500m championship at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin in August 2018, being the first British woman to do so.

Muir won gold in the 3000 meters and 1500 meters at the 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships, setting another championship record in the process.
