Douglas relocated to New York City and began working in sales for Aveda before assisting in the creation of the Aveda Institute, a hairstyling and grooming school. He enrolled in its cosmetology school and worked as a colorist at the New York-based hair salon Arrojo Studio after finishing top in his class. He started working on the reality shows What Not to Wear and While You Were Out. An Arrojo customer notified him about a casting call for a makeover show in 2002.
Kyan provided a picture of himself as well as a short bio he’d written to the producers. He was brought in for an audition and was quickly named the show’s Grooming Guru. As a member of Queer Eye, Kyan appeared on soundtrack CD and DVD-based events, as well as magazine covers and talk programs.
