- Kim joined FC Tokyo in January 2010, making his professional debut on March 20 against Gamba Osaka. His first goal for FC Tokyo occurred on June 6, 2010, against Kyoto Sanga FC in the J. League Cup. He appeared in 23 league matches during his debut season with the club. However, after finishing 16th in the league, the team was demoted to the second tier.
- Kim was traded to Omiya Ardija on December 31, 2010. He stayed with the club for two seasons, appearing in 40 games.
- Kim signed a four-year contract with Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande on July 2, 2012, for a reported sum of $2.5 million.
