Kay Ivey

Kay Ellen Ivey (born October 15, 1944) is an American politician who has served as Alabama’s 54th governor since 2017. She was the 38th Alabama State Treasurer from 2003 to 2011 and the 30th Lieutenant Governor of Alabama from 2011 to 2017. She is a Republican. Following the departure of her predecessor, Robert J. Bentley, she became the second female governor and the first female Republican governor. In the 2018 gubernatorial race, she defeated competitor Walt Maddox by a significant majority.

Kay Ivey was born in Camden, Alabama on October 15, 1944. Boadman Nettles Ivey is her father, and Barbara Elizabeth (Nettles) Ivey is her mother. Her father was a World War II army major who later worked with the Gees Bend community as part of the Farmers Home Administration, a federal initiative.

She adores her family and wrote on Instagram, “As an only child, I treasure the close relationship I had with my parents, Boadman and Barbara Nettles Ivey.” They educated me about life’s joys and sorrows, but most importantly, they taught me how to be a high achiever. I was fortunate to have two God-fearing, loving parents, and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about them. Today, I remember their memories by encouraging you to disconnect from technology and spend quality time with your loved ones.”

She graduated from Auburn University, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, where she became president of her first-year pledge class, and where she participated in the Student Government Association for four years. While at Auburn, Ivey took part in a blackface skit for which she later apologized.

In 1979, she was named to the state cabinet by then-Governor Fob James. She later worked as the reading clerk for the Alabama House of Representatives from 1980 to 1982, and as the Assistant Director of the Alabama Development Office from 1982 to 1985. In 1982, she ran unsuccessfully for State Auditor as a Democrat. In 2018, Ivey passed legislation exempting economic development experts from registering as lobbyists under Alabama ethics law. During the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, Ivey issued a state of emergency on March 13, 2020. On April 3, Ivey issued a stay-at-home order that went into force the next day.
