She had a passion for singing since she was a child, and she began her singing career as a backing singer in the church choir. She was discovered by other artists and made her debut with the singles “Facts of Love,” “True Confessions,” and “Back In Love” in 1986.

Her first collaboration was with L.A. Reid and Babyface, who assisted her in producing her debut album, which she named after herself.
