He started as an athlete. Eight gold medals at the 2013 Norwegian Youth Indoor Championships. He won gold in the boys’ octathlon at the 2013 World Youth Championships. His worst decathlon performances came in the throwing events. In June 2014, he set a Norwegian junior record in the 400m. He was 0.02 seconds slower than Benjamin Lobo Vedel in the 400m at the 2015 European Youth Championships. Silver in the decathlon with 7764 points.

He broke the Norwegian 400 m hurdles record at the 2016 European Championships. Sixth in the final with 49.82 seconds. He reached the 400m hurdles semi-finals at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He set a championship record in the 400 m hurdles at the 2017 European U23 Championships. Silver in the 400 m (45.75 seconds) followed.
