Karen Read is a 41-year-old Mansfield woman, who has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe. Last week, she is accused of running over a Boston police officer and abandoning him in a snowbank.
According to The Boston Globe, Read partied with O’Keefe on Friday night before dropping him off at a friend’s house for an afterparty in the early hours of Saturday morning. In Canton, the house is near 34 Fairview Road.
However, while making a left turn, an inebriated Read allegedly struck the officer with her SUV. She noticed her damaged vehicle the next morning and began looking for her boyfriend, unaware of his whereabouts.
Read allegedly called a friend and drove back to Fairview Road, trying to recall what had happened the night before. Her friends told The Daily Mail that she was still drunk in the morning and couldn’t remember what happened the night before.
Read and her friends discovered O’Keefe unconscious in the snow, bleeding from his nose and mouth, not long after. Deep cuts on his arms, swollen eyes and a fractured skull were also among his injuries. According to reports, the woman attempted to revive her boyfriend and told first responders
O’Keefe was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital right away, but he was pronounced dead. The 46-year-old was not only a 16-year police veteran, but he was also the sole caregiver for his orphaned niece and nephew.
The officer’s tragic death shocked the Boston Police Department, which described him as “an exemplary guardian, son, brother, uncle, and friend.”
Karen Read is a Mansfield-based finance professor. For allegedly running over her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, while inebriated, she was recently charged with “manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide, and leaving the scene of a collision.”
Karen Read works at Bentley University in Massachusetts as a finance lecturer. She also works at Fidelity as an equity analyst. The 41-year-old also attended Bentley University and graduated from the Elkin B. McCallum Graduate School of Business, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Read is said to have begun dating O’Keefe two years ago and remained with him until his death last week. In a Massachusetts courtroom, she was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against her in connection with her boyfriend’s death.
