Judi Dench was born on December 9, 1934, in Heworth, York, England, to Eleanora Olive (formerly, Jones) and Reginald Arthur Dench (1897- 1964). Her father was a physician. Her mother was born in Ireland, while her father was born in England but moved to Ireland as a child.
Her father met her mother while attending Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Judi received her formal education at the Mount School in York, England. Jeffery Dench was her older brother (1928-2014). She is a Quaker in terms of her religious beliefs.
