Juan Merchan (born 1963) is an American judge and lawyer. He is now an Acting Justice for the New York County Supreme Court. He has been actively practicing law for about three decades.

Juan Merchan began his legal practice in 1994 after receiving his law degree. In the same year, he began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Trial Division of the New York County District Attorney’s Office.
After four years in that post, he was promoted to the Investigations Division in 1998, where he stayed for almost a year. He began working for the New York State Attorney General in 1999 and remained there until 2006.
He began his career as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General in Charge of the Nassau County Region. He was eventually elevated to Assistant Attorney General in-Charge of Affirmative Litigation (Nassau and Suffolk County) and Assistant Attorney General in-Charge (Nassau County Region) over the next seven years.
In August 2006, he began working as the Judge of the Family Court of Bronx County after being nominated. During his nearly three-year tenure, he presided primarily over Juvenile Delinquency cases, PINS petitions, and designated felonies.
Juan departed Bronx Family Court after Governor David Peterson named him to the Court of Claims in April 2009. At the same time, Judge Ann Pfau appointed him as Acting Justice of the New York County Supreme Court in Criminal Term.
While he continues to serve as Acting Justice, his term as a Judge of the Court of Claims expired in 2018. Throughout his career, he has ruled over major criminal trials involving people like Donald Trump and Steve Bannon.
