Juan Dixon began his studies at the University of Maryland. He was later discovered by head coach Gary Williams at an AAU tournament in Georgia. Similarly, Williams stood there watching Dixon dive for the ball while trailing by 20 points. The effort was then lauded by Williams. Maryland began the 2001–02 season as the second-ranked team in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Similarly, Dixon led the Terps to their first National Championship, leading them to a 32–4 record.

Later, he scored 29 points against Wisconsin to help Maryland advance to the Sweet Sixteen, passing Len Bias as Maryland’s all-time leading scorer (2,149 points).
