Joshua Treadwell McCown, a Texan, was born on July 4, 1979. His interest in American football began when he was a child and he used to train with them. He later transferred to Jacksonville High School, where he earned All-State honorable mention as a senior.
Following high school, he enrolled at Southern Methodist University, where he continued his football career with the Mustangs. He had 27 touchdowns, 4,022 yards, and 34 interceptions in three years of college football with the Mustangs. He later transferred to Sam Houston State University for a season before being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals.
